As Another Member Resigns
Two SBEC Board Members Appointed
The governor (May 11) appointed Highland Park [Dallas County] ISD seventh grade math teacher Jean Streepey and Julia Moore of Pflugerville (the founder of a public relations firm) as new SBEC board members, for terms expiring Feb. 1, 2025.

They replace Haskell ISD English teacher/former SBEC board chair Jill Druesedow and citizen member/former Houston ISD board president Laurie Bricker, whose terms both expired on Feb. 1, 2019. They had both been serving as holdover board members until the governor appointed their replacements.

Meanwhile, at SBEC’s May 1 board meeting, it was announced that Carlos Omar Villagrana had resigned from the board in the nonvoting position reserved for an alternative certification program (ACP) representative because he had (as he put it in a letter to the board) “transitioned away” from his position as YES! Prep Public Schools charter district’s Teaching Excellence ACP executive director.

Villagrana’s resignation leaves the board with no educator preparation representative.

The other spot reserved for a nonvoting ed-prep representative (for a college of education dean) has been vacant for more than a year.

It will be up to the governor to appoint their replacements.
