Dyslexia Handbook Revisions Approved
The State Board of Education (SBOE) gave 2nd/final reading approval (agenda) to an updated version of the state’s Dyslexia Handbook.

That School Trustees Take Safety Training
The SBOE took the first step toward implementing the provisions of 2021’s HB690-Metcalf (regular session) that requires local school board trustees to complete training in school safety. The bill requires the SBOE to approve the curriculum for the training in consultation with the Texas School Safety Center.

TEA staff briefed the SBOE Committee on School Initiatives (agenda/webcast-Click Item 5) about the upcoming “Generation 27” application leading to the selection of new charter districts to open starting in School Year 2023-24.

Other SBOE Activity
Approved on First (of two) Reading for Public Comment (to be posted here by Oct. 8):
- The TEKS (agenda) for 38 career and technical education (CTE) courses, primarily in the areas of: 1) Health Science, 2) Hospitality and Tourism, 3) Law and Public Service and 4) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Changes were made to the printed agenda version.
- A revised Science TEKS (agenda) for elementary and middle schools. Changes were made to the printed agenda version.
The board also:
- Set the preliminary school finance related per capita (per student) apportionment rate for 2021-22 at $402.428 (agenda). The final rate will be set next summer. For most districts and charters, the per capita rate does not affect how much school funding is received from the state.
