Parents Must Receive Special-Ed “One Pagers”
The TEA posted (Feb. 13) sample one-page notices (in English and Spanish) that are designed to provide easy-to-understand info about special-ed to all families of students enrolled in Texas public schools.
The distribution of the special-ed info sheets to parents/families is a new requirement under 2019’s SB139. Districts and charters must affirm to the TEA, by April 30, 2020 — via an online confirmation system — that they have complied with the mandate.
Before distributing the info sheets districts and charters must modify them to include their own unique contact info. To the extent possible, the sheets must be provided in the family’s home language.
Among other things, the info pages inform parents and guardians that they have the right to request a special-ed evaluation at any time for their child and that the state and schools no longer set “targets” that would result in limiting the numbers of special-ed students identified and served.
