Including Sex Education in Health
Final Health, PE and Science TEKS Adopted
The board unanimously approved on 2nd/final reading a replacement TEKS (curriculum) for: 1) K-12 Health Education, 2) K-12 Physical Education and 3) the four largest enrollment high school science courses (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Integrated Physics and Chemistry (IPC).
Predictably, the sex education portion of the Health TEKS proved to be the most controversial, both in a final public hearing and in the board’s subsequent discussion and votes on individual amendments (see Texas Tribune).
The revised TEKS are to become applicable starting with: 1) School Year 2022-23 for Health Education and Physical Education and 2) School Year 2023-24 for Science.
The board made numerous changes in the Health Education and Science TEKS areas from what was approved on first reading in September (as printed in the November board meeting agenda), and made no changes to the revised TEKS for PE as approved on first reading in September (and was printed in the November agenda).
We will post links to the adopted revisions when they become available.
