SBOE Gets Slightly Less Republican
Texas voters on Nov. 3 elected four new SBOE members and re-elected four incumbents, as reflected below:

All were elected for four-year terms beginning in January. The 15-member board’s majority will continue to be Republican, but less so, moving from the current 10/5 Republican/Democrat ratio to a 9/6 Republican/Democrat ratio.
That occurred due to Democrat Rebecca Bell-Metereau, in her fourth attempt to capture a SBOE seat, defeating Republican Lani Popp for the District 5 seat being vacated by retiring SBOE Member Ken Mercer, R-San Antonio.
Except on rare occasions, the 15-member board has tended to work cooperatively and without partisan rancor.
The three other SBOE members who declined to run for re-election are Republicans Donna Bahorich of Houston (Dist. 6), Barbara Cargill of Conroe (Dist. 8) and Marty Rowley of Amarillo (Dist. 15).
The terms of the remaining seven SBOE members will be subject to election in 2022.
