Recycling Rule Proposed
ISDs with 10,000 or more students will have to comply with state-required recycling mandates — unless they receive a hardship waiver — under a proposed rule (executive summary) posted by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. The rule will implement 2019’s SB1376.

TASA/TASB Awards
Accolades announced during the just concluded first virtual Texas Association of School Administrators /Texas Association of School Boards (TASA/TASB) convention included:
  • McAllen ISD Superintendent Jose Gonzalez as TASB’s 2020 Superintendent of the Year.

  • Finalists were: 1) Roland Hernandez, Corpus Christi ISD, 2) Michelle Barrow, Newton ISD, 3) Jamie Wilson, Denton ISD and 4) Becky McCutchen, Alpine ISD.

  • The Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD school board as TASA’s 2020 Outstanding School Board.

    TASA’s “Honor Board” finalists were the: 1) Mesquite ISD, 2) Sheldon ISD, 3) Temple ISD and 4) Tornillo ISD school boards.

  • TASA announced that Dallas ISD kindergarten/first-grade teacher Eric Hale is the state’s Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year, and will represent our state in the National Teacher of the Year competition.

    The Texas Secondary Teacher of the Year is Canutillo ISD history teacher Anthony Lopez-Waste.

  • Retired Austin ISD communications director and longtime education reporter Andy Welch was honored as the 2020 Texas Key Communicator by the Texas School Public Relations Association (video).

Charter Awards
The Texas Public Charter Schools Association’s 2020 Teacher of the Year is Christina Correa, an art teacher at the IDEA College Preparatory charter’s San Juan campus.

The association’s Leader of the Year is Edward Conger, superintendent of the International Leadership of Texas (ILTexas), which recently started accepting students statewide in its virtual program.
