“Kids Count”
Texas ranks 8th worst in the nation — 43rd overall — for child well-being, according to the 2020 Kids Count Data Book report (info here and here) from the Annie E. Casey Foundation released June 22.
The annual Data Book tracks child well-being nationally and ranks the states by how well they are doing for their children using 16 indicators to rank each state across four domains, which are (and how Texas ranked): 1) health (45th), 2) education (34th), 3) economic well-being (37th) and 4) family and community (47th).

Appointed
The governor announced (June 17) he has appointed three new members to the board of the Texas School Safety Center and has reappointed five others.
Telsa Deal
Austin media reported that the 10,968-student Del Valle ISD, located in Travis County just southeast of Austin, is considering offering incentives to electric car automaker Telsa that could potentially save the company $68 million on its property tax bill over 10 years if it builds a $1 billion assembly plant employing as many as 5,000 workers on an industrial site within the district.
Travis County commissioners are also reportedly considering offering Telsa $14.656 million in property tax rebates over 10 years.
DVISD officials indicated (in a statement) that if the deal goes through, the ISD and Telsa could work out a partnership agreement to provide the ISD’s students with real-world rigorous and practical internship, apprenticeship and STEM opportunities.
