Charter Enrollments Continue to Increase
At the Expense of Traditional ISDs
Texas charter schools this school year continued their past trends of eating into ISD enrollments, according to a TEN analysis of the TEA’s official 2019-20 public school enrollment data.

- Total charter school enrollments for this school year increased by 20,031 students to 336,900, a 6.3 percent increase.
- Charter school enrollments now make up 6.1 percent of the state’s total 2019-20 enrollment of 5,493,940.This is the first time charters have broken the 6 percent barrier. (see graphic on right)
- ISD enrollments increased by 41,999 students to 5,157,040 this school year, a 0.82 percent increase.
- As previously reported in TEN (March 30), overall student enrollment increased by 62,030 to 5,493,940 (1.14 percent) this school year. (See also 2019-20 budgeted school employee pay data in TEN, April 6.)

6. YES Prep Public Schools (Harris), 12,074.
7. Harmony Science Academy-Waco (McClennan), 9,724.
