Four SBOE members, all Republicans, are not seeking re-election. The remaining three Republicans and one Democrat on the board whose terms are expiring are seeking re-election to the 15-member board.

Two SBOE members whose terms expire at the end of 2022 are running for higher office in Democratic primaries and would not have to resign their board seats unless they are elected to those offices in November.

SBOE District 4 member Lawrence Allen Jr. of Richmond is running for state representative and District 2 SBOE member Ruben Cortez Jr. of Brownsville is running for state Senate.

Unexpired Term?
At press time, the SOS listed the Democratic primary filing by Houston teacher
Larry McKinzie for an “unexpired term” for SBOE District 4 (which Allen currently holds).

Neither Allen nor Cortez have resigned their SBOE seats. TEN was waiting, at press time, for clarification from the Texas Democratic Party about the District 4 SBOE filing by McKinzie.

Allen hopes of joining, in the House, his mother, former SBOE member Alma A. Allen, who is seeking re-election to her Texas House District 131 seat.

McKinzie, by the way, late last year lost in a multi-candidate election for a spot on the Houston ISD school board — which will likely be replaced by a TEA-appointed board of managers (see Page 1) — to Allen Jr.’s sister, Patricia Allen.
